A good friend of mine contacted me to see if I would be willing to work on some logos for his Roller Derby team that he bought.
I haven’t worked with a roller derby team before and the requirements were pretty interesting to start with. So this should be a challenge I thought, and it was. It was a good challenge, and a lot of fun! If you have ever looked at a roller derby logo you will have noticed that a lot of them are designed to look like a cross between pin-up girls from the 30s and biker gangs. There are a lot of skulls, tattoos, girls, and skates. This is all well and good except when you are told that the new logo should be none of that. LOL
We worked on several, (and by several, I mean a lot), different concepts and ideas. Basically it was a free for all. One of the hardest parts about this project was there was nothing to pull from. I couldn’t use skates, wheels, girls, skulls or basically anything that had to do with the sport. So what was I going to use?
One of the more humorous concepts came about because I was frustrated at trying to think of something to put in the logo. I thought of the most unlikely icon and threw that in there. It was super cute.
Yes. A Cherub.
Then somehow the idea of using the Sasquatch was mentioned. So I started working on that little by little.
I started sketching out things that were bigfoot like.
I tried placing the concept into something like a logo to see if any of it was working. A lot of the time I have to actually finish the concept in order to show the client because they can’t understand what is going on in my mind’s eye. So instead of sketches I have to finish the concept and then show them to get feedback from them.
Still not getting what we wanted I decided to change the expression and tried making the face symmetrical. (Kind of looks creepy doesn’t it?)
I thought it looked more like a pale Irish thing instead of bigfoot. But really all they wanted was to see if it could be made to look more girly. Hmmm….
LOL! No! “Longer hair, can you make it with longer hair? Maybe that will make it look girly.”
Okay, cute. But no. LOL
I slept on it for awhile. I actually took the weekend off. Then came back and started sketching what I think of when I think of sasquatch. The thought was that maybe there was something there with this.
I cleaned it up, made it more fierce and tried to see what it would look like on a shirt. Pretty cool. I think this is closer than the other ones that is for sure. But they wanted to see what it looked like as a girl again so….
Every time something is added to the sasquatch to make it more girly it either looks like an old rocker dude, or an old hag.
Having trouble with making the sasquatch look girly I decided to try something completely different to see if that would help.
Okay, the feet are cool, but they still want the head so I tried again to make something feminine and bigfoot like….
Dang it. I like the hair, but overall it is not a complimentary image. So back to the drawing board. They said they wanted to work with the silhouette sasquatch head but have it looking to the left or to the right. I didn’t understand that, so this is what happened.
I later learned that they liked the head and the way it was done but that they wanted the head to be less straight on, and more coming from the side. This is what they meant by looking left or right! Ahh… okay.
BAMM! This is more like it! Forgo the girl stuff and just make a killer sasquatch. I like it! I haven’t heard what they think about it just yet, but I like it enough that I thought I would try it out on some shirts and billboards.
I think it looks hot. I love it. I can’t wait to hear what the client has to say about it. 🙂
